Bittorrent Server.

July 7th, 2007

Well the other day I came across a couple of bittorrent routers so it got me thinking about making one on the cheap which is just as efficient if not more, so I set out to do so.

So i figured a computer to run around the clock shouldn’t be very powerful strip it down to the minimal 128mb RAM and at the most 500mhz processor, so I asked around and luckely someone was throwing a old computer out which was around 500mhz.

So I considered a lot of operating systems but came to the conculsion of using Windows, it is very user friendly compared to Linux allowing to easily configure and run so i am running Windows 2000 Server Edition, I would prefer to run something like Damn Small Linux because it uses up very little resources which will also cut the electricity bill down but for now I will play with Windows.

Next I needed to find a bittorrent client, one of my favorite clients is Utorrent it has encryption and most of all a web user interface, so we can connect remotly to utorrent.

Next i wanted to access my files and also run it as a web server allowing me for a later date to stream my music from a web page, so to access files I want to access it using FTP so i started a filezilla server, for a web server I used Xampp downloads everything in one mySQL, Apache etc.

So installing, installing Windows is fairly simple just setup your partitions and your good to go, installing Utorrent is fairly simple just download the WebUI version and follow the Read Me, XAMPP is easy peasy you can just press the next buttons if you like following the default options, it comes with Filezilla ( i prefer to download it separately though) just drag the filezilla icon into the start up folder and it will boot up each time.

Now you can download all your podcasts without the need to switch it on and off all the time, and saving a lot of your electricity bill.

Just put it a side and press the on button when you need it you shouldn’t need a keyboard or mouse you can just press the on button and everything is started up, only trouble i have with mine was the old PSU very loud so i brought a quiet one and its running perfectly using a wireless PCI card so i can practicly move it anywhere I want.

Firefox Addon: Temporary Inbox

July 5th, 2007

Well as you might know I did a post a while back on Disposable Email Addresses now I’ve found a plugin for firefox which helps a long the way with temporary email addresses.

Okay so this addon is called Temporary Inbox, but why you might ask do we need this as i explained with the other post (Temporary Email Addresses) it will protect you from many things like spam and identity theft.

So you can find Temporary Inbox on the mozilla website here what the addon does is it generated a random email address using various domains provided it will give you the option to check the mail or one of my favorite options is forward your mail.

So if your a disposable email address fanatic then go and download it at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2650.

POTW: WinPatrol

July 3rd, 2007

WinPatrol User InterfaceThis is one of my favorite security programs its brilliant in how it works one of my favorite ways is say you edit the host file it will have a message pop up saying the host file has been edited would you like to accept this change, now imagine someone has put malicious code in their remotely when WinPatrol checks it will find that someone has changed it and you don’t have to accept it.

Now the most important thing is the resources programs use like the ammount of RAM this is a brilliant for using very little space and RAM usage.

If you really want to secure your computer download it, it really is a good program worth installing.

POTW: Bluetooth Remote Control.

June 30th, 2007

btrc.jpgI’ve been addicted to this tool a lot this weekend the main reason is so I can control play list from it, I can turn the volume up and down skip the track, fast forward and rewind its a amazing.

I highly recommend this if you use your computer as a media center, it will save you purchasing a expensive remote control for your computer.

Most people already have a phone with bluetooth installed and now you get bluetooth dongles with a lot of mobile phones, if not you can pick one up for under a tenner.

Blog Tipping #1

June 17th, 2007

So today I’m going to point out my favorite blogs and posts with in them.

Family WebWatch Blog undelete filesFamily Watch Blog Ken talks about undeleting your files, this is a brilliant tool ken outlines and will help any business man that’s accidentally deleted something they wanted.

And using this tool you can recover whats been deleted from your hard drive, this is easily done as when you delete something from your recycling bin its just not seen by you its still their though it is only removed when it is over written by new files.

ProBlogger Affiliate SalesProBlogger talks about affiliate advertising and how he got into the field it’s a brilliant read if your interested in affiliate advertising.

He talks about how he started out with affiliate advertising from ebay its a nice read if you want to achieve something in affiliate advertising.

Your safety online, it is up to you.

June 15th, 2007

We all know that if you have kids you don’t want them to see certain things on the internet and I’ve been reading a lot of internet safety websites lately and I can’t help but notice that a lot of the complaining is aimed at the software developers, but it shouldn’t be everything you need is their, just not configured to your specific liking.

So you don’t want your kids to be seeing all these scamming popups well block them, yeah we have problems with double click popups but you can block all popups this will stop unwanted scam advertisements, this is easily done in Opera or Firefox if you don’t have them installed then why are you using the internet, you SHOULD be using at least Firefox or much better Opera, if you refuse to use these programs then you cant complain.

Don’t want anyone searching for certain terms like “kazzaa” you can filter it considering that a lot of people now have routers, routers now have built in content filtering looking through your router you will find content filtering, this will stop any page loading if it shows “kazzaa” inside the page, you can add loads and loads of words to it and more than likely you can find ready made databases for it.

You want to stop programs being installed onto your computer then make the default login to be a guest member, just run “control userpasswords2” this will allow you to auto login the guest account, this stops them installing any programs if you want to install anything just right click on the exe file >> run as >> administrator, this will install it under administrative privileges.

So lets see, these three things will help you stay very safe online, it can be done very easily in a short amount of time, if I get any time I will explain each step in a new post.

Temporary Phone Numbers

June 6th, 2007

A couple of days ago I told you about Temporary email addresses, well today I found you can also have temporary phone numbers all this stuff is new to me but it looks like a brilliant idea.

So why can this be a good idea?

This is a brilliant idea, its temporary if you run a small business this allows you to put your temporary phone number up on the internet allowing for people to call you but if you get a prank caller and they keep calling change it, you will still have your original phone number but the temporary one will be changed.

So what if you want to call them back?

It will display your current number it will not display your temporary number, unless you get them to call you and this can be done easily as well using Jajah, it’s a web activates telephony, it allows you to enter their number and make them call your temporary phone number.

This service I can see being good in some ways but it will also have its disadvantages for example if your looking at it from a social engineers point you will see that this can be used in a number of ways to get information, so it can be dangerous but lets make the most of it while we can.

So here are some sites which you can use http://www.jangl.com http://craigsnumber.com I would have to say looking at their capabilities I prefer Jangl as this actually allows you to call them without being known but in terms of being anonymous I prefer CragsNumber.com, but remember these aren’t for the UK so you might find your phone bill a lot unless you find a area code for your area.

I shall keep bookmarking the temporary phone number sites under my delicious page under phone http://del.icio.us/TyperTappers/phone.

Temporary Email Address

June 1st, 2007

Now who hasn’t wanted to create a email address just to validate some crap, but you normally end up getting loads of spam from them so I did a little searching around and found bugmenot.com has a usefull tool (http://email.bugmenot.com) it will create a email address for 24 hours allowing you to get the validation message and hear no more from them.

I never realised before that people actually did this and I now have a large amount of them bookmarked which you can find on my typer tappers delicious page http://del.icio.us/TyperTappers.

It makes sence upon how this works I remember one of my website hosts used to have a root address so I could do something like billbob93726938@typertappers.com and it would to the root address which was something like root@typertappers.com it you host your own mail server you might know what I mean but other wise if you want to temporarily subscribe to something check out my bookmarks http://del.icio.us/TyperTappers/email.
