Leaving footprints online good or bad?

September 18th, 2007

I think I’ll start off by asking if you have a myspace account (typical answer yes) this I find bad if you do not want to leave a footprint on the internet this is the place you do not want to leave one.

Let’s see who looks at your myspace pages, could your employers look in fact they do not they have found these places to be very truthful they will not look at your social sites like myspace, bebo and facebook. But a lot of the time you can actually use this to your advantage if you have completely crap qualifications you make these pages look like you know a thing or two you have a much better chance of getting in that your opponent that has posted pictures on their myspace from their drunken nights out, if you was employing someone which would you choose?

But the real question is what other ways could these be exploited and the actual fact is identity theft yeah these things are possible, so the issue is that if you are a member of many social sites leaving parts of your life on each like on one you have DOB the others locations maybe even a phone number. Even having these on different sites these can be linked together at the click of a button, but you might be wondering is how they would find these sites easily if you have an name then its easy. Now there are many ways to get around this like creating a fake name not completely legal but its better than using your real name if you are not the adventurous time then you can use a generator.

Securing your computer Typer Tappers style!

September 17th, 2007

Considering 90% of users use Windows 9% Mac and 1% Linux I shall focus on Windows, now we all know how buggy Windows XP is just look at the security updates you get everyday, its silly.

Normally I tell people to download Linux like Ubuntu, Kubuntu or PCLinuxOS, but we all know it’s not easy to learn another operating system.

So I shall point out some key factors in securing your windows box stopping the occasional viruses.

So lets start with basic stuff your security applications, running Microsoft’s firewall disable it and download a better one, there are a lot out their for example sygate (before taken over by Symantec), not really recommended if you are a novice user.

Instead you want to be looking at a more user friendly firewall one I like is Comodo, gives you a lot of detail on what its doing and will alert you when applications try to access the internet.

Next Anti-virus programs, one of my most preached application is Avast on access scanner this will scan all incoming and outgoing traffic from emails to P2P files and even web pages, so if a malicious active x script runs in your browser Avast will stop it in its tracks so you don’t become infected.

New Theme: Classical

September 15th, 2007

classicalss.jpgDescription: The idea of this theme was for a elegant classical style, I’ve been trying to keep things to a minimal such as widgets you will notice if you have the correct plugins (named below) that they are placed at the bottom of the page (footer) to keep them out of the way but allowing the spiders to crawl as many pages as possible.
The choice of using png images for the layout was to make it easier for your use, using png allows the fade effect to be slightly see through so that when placing a background it will not mess up the effect, so it allows you to place what ever background you want.
It was designed for screen resolutions over 800 by 600 as the width of the theme is 900, allowing you to display more content allowing your visitors to get the best experience from visiting your website.

Problems: PNG format, is not compatible with IE6 (internet explorer 6) but it will work with IE7 and above.
Three posts above displayed for some reason messes the footer up, I have not yet found out why this is happening please if you know leave feedback.
It does not look bad but it does look out of place slightly.

Program Of The Week: Launchy

September 8th, 2007

If you like linux you may have come across an application called Katapult which you can use by hitting alt + space which will then bring up a screen where you can type a name of a application such as kcalc which will then be launched, I’ve been looking for a similar thing for windows as if you look at my start menu you will see that I’ve attempted to order everything but its just too many folders to look through, so I started my hunt and found Launchy.

Launchy Searching For Tool - The Pot MP3

Launchy is very easy to customize you can have it search any directory for any file for example all my mp3′s are on Z drive at a whopping size of 40gb’s which makes it hard to look for a song so i just added that to the index and had it just search for a file type of .mp3, it also finds your applications by looking at your start menu location such as C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs in that it will look for the .lnk files and place them in the index.

It does more than that though, if your a fan of Firefox it will also index all the bookmarks so for example say i want to launch the web-mastery website I can just type in their title which is webmaster forums and it will show up the bookmark.

Another part i like about Launchy is the calculator no I’m not kidding it has one of the best calculators I’ve seen in it you can just type in 2+2 and it shows for you an keep going its brilliant for anyone who needs to workout sums at speed.

One of the good things is this can also be put on a USB flash drive but that is for an article to come.

How To Earn Money Over Night From Your Website.

August 31st, 2007

There are many methods of earning money from your website but this is my method.

The main target in running a website is getting your visitors to keep coming back, for example lets say that every month your getting a extra 50 unique visitors but none of them are repeat visitors so if your writing amazing articles that people are subscribing to they will come back this will be a even bigger boost in traffic it can practically double your unique count every month.

First of all you need to work on actually getting people their, this can be done using the art of search engine optimization, if you can get a higher page rank then more people will be finding your keywords.

Getting this page rank can be done many ways the main important one is links to and from your website, once your getting more and more links to your website Google figure that you’ve got to have some importance and therefore make your PR (page rank) higher meaning more and more visitors finding your keywords, keywords are another very important thing there are many ways to make Google give them more importance like in this article on making keywords stand out.

New Theme Uploaded

August 28th, 2007

I’ve been working on a new them for around 3-4 days, I thought that my old theme was possibly driving people away due to the gothic look of it so I made a new one and this is it.

I’ve tried to make it less cluttered, for example I moved the archives to the top left of the page in a drop down box hoping this will save me some room for some better options to hopefully bring in the visitors.

I’ve also added a search box which I didn’t have before so that people can now look through my articles easier, at the moment it doesn’t look pretty but I will be working on a better look for it at a later date.

Hope you like the theme would love some feedback.

Stopping Spam Getting Throught.

August 25th, 2007

Spam its on the increase constantly, so you need to be aware of how to block it.

1. Akismet – very popular way to catch spam, for me it has only ever let 3 through out of around 2,000 so its my number one.

2. Change the settings in discussion (options >> discussion), a important one i find is ticking “Comment author must have a previously approved comment” this will then only allow people that commented previously to comment again.

3. Stats programs for WordPress, these can be brilliant tools to use against spammers, I use one called Popularity Contest this will tell you what posts are most commented on even after the spam has been removed, then you can edit the post to disable commenting, I’ve found in some cases its practically halfed my spam count!

Website Content Make Your Keywords Stand Out.

August 21st, 2007

You may of figured out by now that having keywords stand out could be important in getting your website ranked their are many ways in which you can do this:

1. Meta tags most important thing on your websites are use of meta tags these make life much easier, if your running WordPress you will be able to do this easily by using a plugin called Ultimate Tag Warrior.

2. Bold tags you wouldn’t of thought this but using the bold tag it will make your keywords stand out more with Google so it puts them rank higher, but you don’t want to go over the top, keep it low maybe 10 per page, if you just spam your site with them Google will ignore you and lower your rank.

3. The H1 and H2 tags, these tags are used for headers and can be a very important thing in the world of SEO, by using the header tags Google will figure out that its a title theirfore ranking it higher and making your keywords much stronger, if your running a blog the header tags are a must have!

4. I will end with the most important one your title the <title></title> can be the most important thing in your website, using this in the correct way will make the most of your website keywords these keywords are the highest rates in the website, you should not use words like the, and, or etc.

So remember to make all your keywords stand out as much as possible.

Website Layout Make It Easy For Google

August 19th, 2007

You might not have thought that it really matters how your website is layed out, as you may have noticed my page is a mess mainly because I’m trying to reconstruct it to get the most out of Google.

How should it be layed out?

Well this is a slightly simple answer, you need the most important content to be shown first, for example this design was made so that the navigator is displayed before the main content in the source code, Google rated the first 50 words the highest so use your layout to make the most of these 50 words.

Also remember to keep your word count on the page around 1500 word if need be split the pages up, this will still allow you to have even better results in Google as each page they will rate the first 50 words the highest, so the more pages the better you might find just don’t over do it.

If your using something like WordPress or Joomla this is easily done you can cut off the content and only show a sample of the text (remembering to make it keyword rich) and then Google can follow the more content link that is left behind and find the rest of it, one down fall of this would be the visitors may not prefer this option over being able to read it all on your front page.

Links to and from your website.

August 19th, 2007

The real question here is what does Google like?

Google, its all about Google now the problem with linking to things like directory’s that require a link back Google will not like that, no longer can you trade links with people unless you do a three way swap yeah this is very complected but now its the only way to still link swap.

One simple way to do this is by creating a del.icio.us account, try to get Google crawling it as much as possible for example add thousands of people to your network meaning you get more links to your account allowing Google to crawl the site more then link delicious to your site but do not link back, but if your on a bunch of forums put a delicious link in your signature or where ever else you can put the link, so use delicious to link to your site as much as possible.

If you’ve got any more sites you can then you can use delicious to link to the site as well, which allows you to stop interlinking them.

Instead of delicious you can use a wide variety of other social bookmarking tools like reddit or you could even use things like blogger.

You wouldn’t of though that linking to a website could be so complicated would you!
